A Gentle Escape: A Short Travel Tale from Mount Abu

Sometimes one requires a soft breeze rustling through pines and a steaming cup of masala chai in the background of quiet hills to be reminded that life does not always have to be at breakneck speeds. That is exactly what Mount Abu offered—a much-needed break.

Concealed in the Aravalli Range, the sole hill station of Rajasthan presents itself as a secret page in an otherwise sun-kissed story. The twisting ascent is teeming with monkeys, sharp precipices, and scenery that renders one’s mobile phone seemingly insufficient. However, at the summit, there is an unexpected feeling of tranquility that accompanies the location.

Nakki Lake, the soul of Mount Abu, is plain but peaceful. I saw paddle boats slicing through the quiet water as the sun set low, sending long shadows across the hills. And a short drive off, the Dilwara Temples quietly stole the spotlight—carvings so detailed, they feel like frozen poetry in marble.

Evenings were best. The air cooled down, the streets were illuminated by small cafes and local stores, and time passed slowly by. There was no rush, just a gentle reminder to catch your breath.

Mount Abu does not scream for your attention—it whispers. And that’s why it stays with you, long after you leave.

Local Flavors

The best part which was yet to arrive my friends is here now …… The Famous Rajasthani Cuisine, No visit to Rajasthan is complete without indulging in its exquisite cuisine. The food is as diverse as the culture, with bold flavors and brilliant colors and it’s the only place where you can experience the old culture of India.

Dal Baati Churma : A traditional dish, they call it baati in Rajasthan, it looks like laddoos, but it’s a savory snack. It basically consists of baked wheat balls (baati) served with spicy lentil curry (dal) and sweet crushed wheat (churma). It is taken by first putting some dal on the top of the bati, then adding some churma not on top of it but having it separately, which is usually eaten on its own as a dessert.

Gatte Ki Sabzi : They’re made from gram flour. They’re little dumplings fried in a tangy yogurt-like sauce. It’s a decent dish, mostly a curry with some gram flour dumplings tossed in.

Laal Maas: Laal maas is a hot mutton curry that spice aficionados must taste. It’s generally made with a variety of red chiles, which gives it a distinct flavor.

Ghevar: Ghevar is a traditional sweet of Rajasthan. It is disc-shaped and has a honeycomb-like structure. Ghevar is made in ghee, flour, and sugar syrup. It is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

Kachori: Imagine a crispy, flaky pastry, but instead of being savory, it’s sweet! Rajasthani Mawa Kachori, also known as Mawe ki Kachori, is a traditional dessert hailing from the royal city of Jodhpur. It’s like a little golden pouch filled with magic.

Ker Sangri : Ker (Wild Berry): Tiny berries found on thorny plants in the desert. That’s Ker for you! These little berries are tart and offer a pop of flavor to the dish.
Sangri (Bean Pod): Sangri beans are obtained from the khejari tree. They are long, slender, and slightly bitter. After soaking, they rehydrate and constitute an important component of this dish.
